A World That Never Was
God Complex is an urban fantasy tabletop RPG about immortal beings who wield extraordinary power while struggling to hold on to their humanity.
The World is Larger Than You Think
The world is not what you thought it was. It is larger, more wondrous, deadlier, and stranger than you can imagine. Many creatures you were told existed only in myth and legend were — and some still are — very real.
Throughout history, there have been people blessed with power and immortality. Mortals sought them out, worshipping them as gods and offering adoration and reverence. Others inspired fear because of their malice and might. Mythology exaggerates many tales, but within those stories lie grains of truth.
"I have had many names over the centuries, though the one I am most known for is Apollo. Before I was Apollo, I was Amon-Ra of ancient Egypt. Later, I became Prometheus, the bringer of light and fire to mortals."
— from the Foreword
From Gods to Elysians
The world changed. Less than a thousand years ago, the Inquisition spread across the land, and mortals no longer viewed these beings with reverence — they hunted them. A Grand Assembly convened and determined that, for the world to survive, humanity would need to forget. Those once called gods retreated into the shadows.
We no longer use the term gods. Instead, we are known as Immortals, Athanasians, those who are deathless — though many of us prefer the name Elysians, reflecting on a better age that some still remember.
The Game's Heart
God Complex is fundamentally a story about power. If a person were suddenly granted extraordinary abilities, how would they choose to use them? Would they act with benevolence and restraint, or become selfish and destructive?
As members of a Pantheon, the player characters represent a powerful force for change within their urban environment. With such influence, however, comes temptation — it can become easy to see ordinary mortals as lesser beings.
Your character began life as an ordinary person. They grew up, attended school, and may still have a job, friends, or family. Although they have inherited immense power, they remain rooted in their humanity. It is this humanity that drives them to act, to care about the world around them, and to remain connected to the lives of ordinary people rather than becoming distant or indifferent.
Five Tensions at the Core
Power
What would you do with the strength of a god? God Complex asks players to confront that question through play.
Humanity
Your character was once ordinary. The longer you live and the more power you wield, the harder it becomes to remember why mortals matter.
Supernatural vs. Mundane
The Pantheon cannot eliminate every supernatural presence. Diplomacy, negotiation, and compromise are the tools of survival.
Old vs. New
The PCs are the youngest Elysians in a cycle spanning thousands of years. Make your mark without drawing the wrath of the ancients.
Identity
Every few centuries, Elysians reinvent themselves into the cultures around them. Who were you before? Who are you now? Who will you become?
Sacrifice
Power always has a cost. Gloriae must be replenished. The Domain must be tended. Loved ones grow old while you do not.
